Achema joins to celebrate Global Fertilizer Day

Global Fertilizer Day highlights agricultural research and better practices as indispensable for #ZeroHunger.

13 October 2017

13th of October 2017 marks the second Global Fertilizer Day, celebrating the Haber-Bosch process as one of the most important inventions of mankind that will continue to feed the world for years to come.

Since the Haber-Bosch’s patent for the process of making fertilizers from air in 1908, much has changed, but the fact remains that today, fertilizers feed more than half of the world’s population.

We now know that the current world’s population of 7.5 billion is expected to rise to a striking 9.7 billion by 2050, increasing by over 2.5 billion over a mere 30 years (UN.org, 2015). Likewise, in the 1960s, one hectare of land yielded a sufficient amount of crops to feed two people. We have come to a realization that by 2025, one hectare of land will need to produce enough yields to feed five people. The world’s hungry population is growing quickly, while our arable land is decreasing. To keep up with this demand of food, the use of fertilizers in farming is absolutely essential.

“Two out of every five people in the world owe their lives to fertilizer.”

– Bill Gates, Wired.com, 2013.

The purpose of this day is to spread knowledge and awareness about one of farming’s most important ingredients, and to highlight the need for continued agricultural research. Innovative products, better practices and precision tools in agriculture, with the end-goal of worldwide food sustainability is at the core of our awareness campaign.

The United Nations is encouraging a tremendous effort to tackle the issue of increase of population due to poverty, conflict and climate change in order to reach #ZeroHunger by 2030. World Food Day 2017, celebrated on October 16th each year, inspires the entire food production chain, from beginning to end to think of the benefit they’ve had on the world’s population and to reevaluate their own efforts to reach the objective of zero hunger. This process begins with fertilizer.
